YI-WEN LAI-TREMEWAN Audio Engineer & Sound Designer

About Me

Hey! I’m an audio engineer and sound designer from New Zealand, based in New York City.

My career in audio started at the age of three with a recorder and a very earnest rendition of “Hot Cross Buns”. I never quite put the instruments down after that – picking up piano at five, saxophone at seven, and a lifelong compulsion to make sound. An early sign of things to come: as a kid, I burned CDs of my saxophone playing to sell to friends and family, setting up the family laptop across the living room just far enough away that the built-in microphone wouldn’t distort. It was scrappy and DIY, but it opened my eyes (and ears) to the world of possibility that is recording and production. These days, I’m equally at home engineering multi-track recording sessions on large format analog consoles with state of the art microphones and outboard gear – though the spirit of making it work with whatever’s available has never really left me.

Even with all that early enthusiasm, my path into the audio industry wasn’t always clear. While studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne, I realised I wanted to bring my musical background into my professional life without leaving my technical instincts behind. Audio engineering and sound design turned out to be the perfect intersection of both. Drawn in by New York’s creative scene and the world-class Master’s program at NYU, I made the move to study Music Technology there, where I would later serve as Technical Director of the Arts & Sciences Music Department.

For the past five years, I’ve worked full-time as an audio engineer and sound designer at Campside Media, a leading podcast production company. In that role, I’ve personally worked on award-winning projects with Apple, Sony, Wondery, iHeart, HBO, Disney, Audible, CBC, SmartLess, and 99% Invisible. My most beloved work lives in the narrative miniseries podcast space, where I have crafted intricate sound design and original scoring to bring stories to life – the kind of work where every sonic detail is intentional. I’ve also recorded hundreds of interviews and know my way around a conversation as well as a DAW.

Before podcasting, I engineered indie and jazz records, produced my own indie electronic music under the moniker Tidy Kivvi, and worked as a front-of-house engineer at live music venues in Brooklyn, running sound for bands and comedy nights alike.

My work spans a wide range of projects – from records and podcasts to live concerts to a field recording project in Iceland capturing the effects of climate change on its glacial landscape. It reflects a career built on curiosity, craft, and a deep love for sound in all its forms. If you’re interested in working with me, get in touch!
